Metal Roofing Materials Come in Variety of Metals
Metal roofing materials can come in several types of metal: steel, stainless steel, aluminum, copper, and zinc alloys. Each metal has different properties that affect durability, price, and appearance.
- Galvanized Steel – Made from wrought iron, this steel is zinc-coated (galvanized) for corrosion protection, and then sealed. It is used for most commercial roofing systems today. It is heavier and sturdier than aluminum; and its A- coating of epoxy primer offers adhesion and a baked-on acrylic top coating adds color options and protection from the elements and sunlight.

- Stainless Steel – This is one of the most very expensive metal roofing materials as it will not rust or corrode. Available for harsh conditions and/or as distinctive design element, it is roll-formed into standing seam profiles, but shingles or shingle styles are available.
- Aluminum – Extremely lightweight, it is used largely for residential metal roofing. It won’t rust and has high energy efficiency. It comes from recycled material so it is environmentally friendly, but it must be painted or coated for appearance and protection.
- Copper – Used for centuries for church, palace and other public building roofs, it will not rust, has no “finish” to scratch or peel, is soft enough to easily tool, and weathers naturally, to a beautiful verdigris (green) patina. It is very expensive as well.
- Alloys – Consisting of a blend of zinc, aluminum and silicon-coated steel, these metal roofing products are formulated for strength, graceful weathering, and durability. As a group, they are rather high in price.
